these are a few of my favourite things...

"...Cream colored ponies and crisp apple streudels
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles..."

They might have been Maria's, from "The Sound of Music", favourite things but mine are different...

I will have to change the words of the song to suit my favourite "things..."

  • getting into bed in freshly laundered and ironed sheets
  • falling asleep listening to the rain outside
  • getting lost in a good book
  • the transition from winter to spring
  • seeing the sun after a rainy day
  • forehead kisses
  • the feeling of the sun against my skin
  • brand new magazines
  • airports
  • smell of babies
  • catching your favourite movie on tv (even if I already have the DVD!)
  • getting "i love you" texts
  • letters  in the mail
  • not having to wake up in the morning
  • fresh flowers around my house
  • coming home after the cleaners have cleaned
  • falling asleep on the couch
  • Friday night drinks
  • buying presents for friends/family
  • taking photos
  • candles, candles and even more candles
I hope the list above has given you a little insight to me...

My bedroom is my sanctuary... for me it's more then just a place to sleep in!  I have my books, magazines, candles, journals right by my bedside.  I am also very lucky to have my own little sitting room in my bedroom with my comfy daybed/large couch and there I have my laptop, camera, tv, dvd, and my personal collection of my favourite chick flicks.  It's my little corner of relaxion, where I read, relax, indulge!

The colour palette is linen and white.  I have a passion for white white, it is so fresh and clean, that works with every other colour and background.  A beautifully covered and laundered bed is vital to me.  Apart from looking good, it is extremely important to keep your linen and bedding clean to protect you from germs.  Our pillowcases and sheets are a magnetic for dead skin, oils, make-up and dirt so it is imperative that we keep them clean.

Here is an interested article from Martha Stewart on when and how to wash your linen:

Regular care: How often you wash your sheets is a personal preference. In general, it's a good idea to launder them weekly to remove dirt and dust. Use warm water rather than hot, which can shrink fibers, and wash printed and colored pillowcases inside out to protect the color. If your sheets feature delicate trim, check the care label before washing.
Stains and spots: When dealing with tough stains, use oxygenated bleach on whites and light colors (chlorine bleach is too harsh for most linens). Cosmetics and face lotions are a common cause of discoloration. Many skin products contain oxidizing agents that actually can bleach sheets. If you are concerned about these spots, choose white linens or consider purchasing an extra set of pillowcases when you buy sheets.

Tumble dry sheets according to label instructions, and remove them before they're fully dry to help minimize wrinkles. To avoid mildew growth, make sure sheets are dry before storing them. If you have the time, ironing your sheets is a surefire way to make them feel new again.

To protect pillows, encase them in pillow protectors (zippered covers that go under the cases). These covers keep allergens at bay while shielding pillows from hair and body oils, which can soak into the filling.
Even with protectors, pillows should be washed at least twice a year; the covers, once a month (along with your mattress cover). Most down and synthetic pillows are machine washable (check the care label). Use mild liquid detergent rather than powder, which may leave a residue. Launder pillows in pairs to keep your machine balanced. Run them through the rinse cycle twice the second time without detergent, to ensure they're rinsed fully.

Dry and Fluffy
In the dryer: For down and feathers: Use the air cycle or low-heat setting, and make sure pillows are completely dry. There shouldn't be any bunches of feathers -- since dampness left in the pillow may cause mold. High heat can encourage clumping in polyester-filled pillows, so dry them on low heat. Your dryer will refluff pillows nicely, especially if you throw in a couple of unused tennis balls (wrapped in clean white socks, to prevent dyes from transferring).

I hope the above information is both helpful and inspiring...

Treat yourself! That is what I will be doing!

As a parent of teenagers I, and many other parents, give so much of ourselves that some days there is nothing left!  I have been feeling like that for a long long time, especially since before Christmas!

Between my kids school commitments and their social life, some days I feel there is no time (or money) left for me! Also being a business owner is not as glamorous as some people believe it to be.  There is the shop, financial, buying, ordering, paperwork, more paperwork and even more paperwork!  So as a  reward to myself, now that my buying season is almost done, I have made the executive decision that every week I will treat myself to something just for ME!

It can be anything... a long leisurely lunch with my friends on a Friday... I love having Fridays off! Love taking the time to enjoy a huge wine/food/chat session with the girls... I normally allow an hour but three hours later still there... you know the ones I am talking about!  The ones where you are only having a glass of wine and then two bottles later...
these girls really know how to do lunch!

Love a luxurious massage, it has to be at least an hour long and none of those intense muscle therapeutic massages for me!  Nope, no way, it has to be nice and comfortable with beautiful scents and candles, maybe the odd hot stone but that is as strenuous as it gets!

yes please! yes please!

Thoroughly enjoy my mani and pedis.  Funny enough I enjoy having those with either my daughter or a friend.  Love the place we go to.  It's always busy but they always manage to find the time to fit you in, and a sister/cousin/mother/aunt of the owner will quickly and efficiently do your toes and nails.  For me it's a regular pedi, always with a dark nail colour and lots of scrubbing, love smooth heals.  As for my mani it's always a Shellac, love my Shellac and yes it does work!  The fact that it's as quick as a regular mani and it lasts for two weeks is amazing.  A light colour for the fingers, a nude or off white, soft pink and the only-for-special-occassions-when-nails-are-short red.

Kimmy loves her mani's!
Sometimes even a nice long breakfast and coffee on my own at one of my favourite places Cafeteria in Black Rock is perfect.   I always manage to see someone I know but even if I don't love the luxury of reading the papers or a magazine eating my poached eggs and avocado with my skinny large latte is enough!

I have Friday off this week and even though I have one business appointment I think it will be a combination of breakfast and the mani/pedi session for this girl here!

How do you treat yourself?

Best Beauty

As an ex make-up artist I get constantly asked, "what's the best foundation?" "what mascara gives you the longs/thickest/darkest lashes...?" "I need a lipstick that goes with everything..."... these questions and more will be answered right here...  Mind you this post I will focus on make-up, skin care will be for another post...

I find that it's one thing I use more than foundation now that I am older...it gives you a smooth even complexion all has moisturising qualities.  I have two favourites

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser has a sheer lightweight formula with a hint of colour.  It is SPF 20 so no need for extra sunblock and comes in 10 different shades.  I love it!

Chanel Hydramax Tinted Moisturiser gives you a dewy glow with no heavy colour.  Definitely no orange here... This is one of my most used items in my make-up case.  I find that the coverage it gives you is more than enough! It comes in 3 shades and works well when you blend it with your moisturiser for an even more sheer look!

Chanel Perfection Lumiere the newest kid on the block from Chanel, I love the fact that it blends with not much effort, no streaky foundation here... another thing I love about it is that is last for a while... definitely a good one for brides and long functions!  It has an SPF 10 and it comes in 20 different shades!

MAC Studio Fix Concealer although its very creamy it gives great coverage to any blemish.  It's long lasting and a very small amount goes a long long way.  It also contains Silica which absorbs the skins natural oils.

YSL Touche Eclat, let's get this straight this product is not a concealer, it is an illuminator!  It DOES NOT cover up spots or blemishes, it is a highlighter.  I use it around the edge of the eyes, where your eye socket is, and it lights up the area around your eyes, it eliminates dark circles and fatigue.  Great for a quick fix!

DiorShow Black Out Mascara as someone who has short, fair lashes I am an expert on mascaras.  I never leave the house with it on so this is...THE BEST MASCARA! Enough said...

Stila Liquid Eyeliner is so easy to use even the most inexperienced person can do it.  It glides easily, has a very fine tip so you don't look like Cleopatra and lasts as its waterproof.  In saying that, it goes off easily with eye make-up remover!  Love it!

I have had to make this category quite specific because I find you need more than one eyeshadow or pack to work for specific things... so here are my personal favourites and what they are specifically good for:

MAC Paint Pot in Painterly, like my mascara it's one product I can't live without.  As well as using this as my eyeshadow primer,  most days its the only eyeshadow I use.  Even though I don't have 'oily' eyelids it stops your eyeshadow creasing, goes on as a cream but gives a dewy look.  Love it and have referred so many people to this product.

Stila Smoky Eye Palette has 4 of the most amazing Stila colours.  The palette actually guides you as to how to create the smoky eye effect, at the same time giving 4 very good individual colours and one of my very favourites Kitten!

Nars Night Series Eye Shadow in Night Breed is Black with Silver glitter through it.  It is amazing for shading, highlighting and but what I love it the most is for its ability to be used as a liner.  You can use it with both a dry and damp brush... such a sexy colour!

Stila Convertible Colour in Peony a great item for your make-up kit.  Great cream blusher as well as an irresistible lipcolour.  Very sheer it gives you a great glow on your cheeks and a fulness to your lips.  A consistent winner of many awards.

Chanel Powder Blush in Rose Ecrin  is a very silky powder blush.  I won't even begin to describe the amazing compact it comes in!  The colour gives you the right amount of glow and colour without over doing it!  A great compliment to any kit!

MAC Lipglass in Lust I have about 5 of these, in my kit, at work and in at least 3 bags!  Great nude colour, gives your lips a nice real fulness.  It is a must have!

Clinique Different Lipstick No 96 Sweet Honey is a natural lip colour that lasts long and it doesn't stain your lips.  I love the creamy silky feeling that leaves your lips moisturised.  It is one of those lippys that you can wear with absolutely no other make-up!

I hope this has answered many questions for you and although the products I have recommended are high end, I personally believe they wear really well and are my own favourite products.

Let me know what your favourite beauty products, I love trying out new things!
